Montane Summer Spine Race Results 2026

Congratulations to our Montane Summer Spine Race winners, whose performances embodied the spirit of adventure and perseverance that defines the Spine Race. While the winners have crossed the finish line, many runners remain out on the trail, digging deep and pushing towards the final cut-offs, proving that the true spirit of the Spine Race is found at every position in the field. Take a look at the first men and women to cross the finish lines of this year's Montane Summer Spine Race series.

Full Spine Male Winner: Ed Payne 82:20:07

After learning hard lessons from a previous attempt on the Pennine Way, Ed returned with a more measured strategy and turned that experience into victory.

As a farmer, Ed is no stranger to battling thick mud and deep bogs, and those everyday skills certainly paid off out on the Pennine Way. He showed absolute mastery, resilience, and pure grit over every single mile to claim the ultimate title.

Full Spine Male: Ed Payne

Full Spine Female Winner: Jenny Hartley 104:55:46

Leading the Women’s race from start to finish. A former soldier and Invictus Games medallist, Jenny turned to open water swimming and ultra running to help her heal after tragically and very suddenly losing her child, 3 weeks old.

Challenger South Male: Chris Cope, Montane Athlete - 21:01:21 - course record

Chris continues one of the most impressive runs of form in recent Spine history. Having won the full Summer Spine in 2024 and set a Sprint South course record in 2025, he stepped up to Challenger South and lowered another course record, further cementing his reputation as one of the Pennine Way's fastest specialists.

Challenger South Male: Chris Cope

Challenger South Female: Jodie Kantas 31:14:25

Jodie ran a controlled and consistent race to secure victory, building a decisive advantage over the chasing field. In an event where pacing errors are often punished, her steady performance proved the key to success.

Challenger South MRT Male: Matthew Kilner 35:33:47

When he's not responding to callouts with Holme Valley Mountain Rescue Team, Matthew Kilner can often be found covering big miles in the hills. This summer he put those skills to good use, taking top honours in the Challenger South MRT category with an impressive run from Edale to Hawes.

Challenger South MRT Female: Hannah Lowe 43:41:36

Hannah Lowe added her name to the list of Mountain Rescue Team category winners with an impressive performance on the Challenger South course this year.

Sprint South Male: Jonathan Breeze 08:21:35

Taking the lead early and never relinquishing it, Jonathan delivered a commanding front-running performance. Maintaining that pace across the challenging terrain of the Pennine Way is a feat that few runners can achieve.

Tasha's victory marks a remarkable rise in the sport. After making her ultramarathon debut only months earlier at the Winter Spine Sprint North, she returned with greater confidence and experience to claim her first Spine title.

Challenger North Female: Laura Nobles 49:31:49 - course record

Tim produced one of the fastest runs ever seen on the course, taking a full hour off the previous record. On a route where improvements are usually measured in minutes, such a margin is exceptional.

Beating course record by an hour and 2nd overall. This adds to her phenomenal legacy after she also broke the course record on Sprint South in 2025.
